Osteopaths are medically recognized doctors who specialize in musculoskeletal diseases of the body.
One of their main areas of focus is the spinal column and how the entire body reacts to problems in this area. With the increase in back pain caused by sitting in a typical office chair, many osteopaths have recommended using a kneeling chair to relieve many of the pressure points that are aggravated by a regular chair.
The first thing you’ll notice about a kneeling chair is the angle. The seat and back tilt forward about 60 degrees, as opposed to a standard chair which has a 90 degree angle. In addition, the kneeling chair has an extra padded area on which the knees rest, hence the name. This is not the same as kneeling on the ground, in which all the body’s weight is on the shin area. With a kneeling chair, you’re still sitting but body weight is distributed evenly and the body is in balance.
Osteopaths recognize that the kneeling chair improves posture, strengthens lower back muscles and eases pressure on the spine. Many people tend to slide down into a regular chair and there is no longer any back support. With a kneeling chair the strain is taken off the back and there’s no tendency to slump due to the angle of the kneeling chair.
Since the spine aligns into a neutral position, unnatural pressure and resulting pain are drastically reduced. Blood flow is improved to muscles by the natural tendency of the body to shift slightly while in the kneeling chair, which improves circulation to the entire body.

Kneeling chairs are suitable for all ages! No matter how old or how young you are, the kneeling chair will be a benefit to you and your back! It encourages you to sit up straight, and the younger you can start training your body to do this the better.
The knee chair was one of the first to look at the problems inherent in “right-angle” sitting and to offer an alternative posture with an open thigh to spine angle. This innovative kneeling chair position makes sitting upright feel effortless. The posture of a person in a kneeling chair is not the same as kneeling on the ground. It is assumed that the knees bear most of the body’s weight when sitting in a kneeling chair, but this is not correct because the shins bear some weight for stability, reducing the weight borne by the upper thighs and buttocks, but the body is still sitting, not kneeling.
There are different types of kneeling chairs like yoga chair, balance chair and kneelsit chair. These are all the trademarks. Yoga chair is the term generally used to describe a gentle form of yoga that is practiced sitting in a chair, or standing using a chair for support. It is not recognized formally as a type of yoga.
Varies kneeling chairs based upon the Balance concept, encourages the user to straighten up and balance the spine over the pelvis. This promotes the natural ´S´ shape to the spine and avoids a slouched posture which can lead to back pain. Kneeling chair is adjustable in height and seating angle to provide the most comfortable position for the individual. It is fitted with castors for mobility and it can also be folded easily for storage.

The First Kneeling Chair!
The kneeling chair actually was originated in the country of Norway. In the 1970 time period, Han Christian Mengshoel of Norway began experimenting with ways to reduce the back strain experienced by office workers. Low back pain, curvature of the spine and general body aches characterized typical complaints.
Mengshoel focused on the strain that is placed on the spine by typical chairs and tried several different angles, testing the resulting muscle strains of each.
He began to see that by changing the angle of the chair from 90 degrees to the 60 to 70 degree angle of a kneeling chair, the entire torso angle also opened, which helped the spine to settle into its natural curve.
By adding the kneeling pad, this brought the knees to a level below the hip area and the lower spine, particularly the lumbar vertebrae, settled into a more natural position.
Mengshoel invited several furniture makers in Norway to work with him on creating a chair unlike anything that had been seen before. They came up with a design that proposed a whole new way of sitting, and presented it at the furniture fair in Copenhagen. Furniture makers around the world quickly took up the design and soon kneeling chairs of all shapes and sizes began to hit the market. The public was a bit skeptical at first, but soon word of mouth began to spread the benefits of the unusual design and kneeling chairs sprang up in offices of all sizes.
The typical number of sick days by office workers reporting back pain reduced sharply and the success of the kneeling chair spread. Today the kneeling chair is a common sight in many corporate and small business offices.
